The National Youth Roundtable on Legislation (NYRL) is Canada's first ever recognized legislative youth council, recognized by MPs from all parties in the House of Commons. The NYRL enabled young Canadians to meaningfully affect legislation. The Roundtable will reviewed ills and delivered reports to members of parliament, ensuring youth voices are heard in policymaking discussions and legislative action.
Recognizing the importance of youth engagement in Canada’s political sphere, the NYRL is a first of its kind in Canada. The Roundtable aimed to bridge the gap between federal politics and Canadian youth, driving greater youth engagement. This means reviewing specific bills and policies that would specifically impact young people.
The responsibility and role of the National Youth Roundtable is to take apart federal legislation and explore the impact of each bill on the youth population in Canada. The NYRL will review what the long-term impact of legislation is on young Canadians using research and statistics.
Ultimately, NYRL's work culminated in the released of Hear Our Voices, Hear Us Now, a national report on youth priorities in advance of the 2025 Federal election. Extensive engagement was conducted in writing this report.
Comprised of diverse young Canadians from various backgrounds and regions across Canada, the Roundtable conducts research to inform policymakers, members of Parliament, and members of the public about critical legislative matters affecting young Canadians.
Through proactive public advocacy and dissemination of its research findings, the NYRL amplifies the voices of young Canadians, striving to influence legislative decision-making and promote policies that build a more inclusive and responsive democratic process. By empowering youth to actively participate in shaping their country's future, the Roundtable contributes to a more equitable and representative governance structure.
